10 Things to Consider When Choosing a Retirement Home.

Whether you’re an active “junior senior” looking forward to a maintenance-free lifestyle or a homebody who needs a bit of support with daily living, moving to a retirement residence can be the perfect choice. But choosing the right one takes a lot of thought. We’ve put together a list of things to consider before you start your search.

10 questions to ask yourself before choosing a retirement residence

  1. How much support do you need? Different residences offer different levels of care, and very few provide the full range of lifestyle options from total independence to total care. It is important to consider what you wish now, as well as how you will be supported should your needs change.
  2. What about your suite? Do you want your own apartment, with a fully equipped kitchen and laundry? Or would you prefer to choose a one- or two-bedroom suite?  Is a balcony important to you? Are pets allowed?
  3. Is fresh, delicious food a priority? Many of the better retirement homes offer world-class meals prepared by chefs who are Red Seal certified—a designation that assures exceptional quality. Be sure to be clear about special dietary requirements too.
  1. What clubs, activities and programs interest you? All residences offer activities of some sort. Do you like to have a wide choice of art, music, games, classes, enrichment, entertainment and outings to choose from? Do you like to be busy or do you prefer to sit with a book or puzzle?
  2. Which on-site amenities are you looking for? Do you like to swim? Play golf? Play the piano? Host family dinners? Make a list of your must-haves, from fitness facilities to fireplaces, rooftop patio to wine lounge.
  3.  What about safety protocols? Peace of mind comes from round-the-clock concierge service along with robust safety and security protocols monitored night and day.
  4. Do you like the neighbourhood? Does it offer walkable amenities, is it close to transportation, and are there health care facilities nearby?
  5. What’s included? What fees are extra? How do costs change as care needs change?  How often do rents and service fees increase? It’s important to note that rental retirement property regulations vary between provinces and territories, as well as between residences themselves: From housekeeping services, to meals per day and care service details, familiarize yourself with the fine print.
  6. Does reputation matter? Is the residence a stand-alone or owned by a corporation? Is it Canadian? Does it have industry credentials, such as Canada’s Best Managed? What do you read about it online?
  7. How do you want it to feel? Warm and welcoming? Active and bustling? Airy and elegant? Can you picture enjoying yourself enjoying day-to-day life in this place?

Even when you find everything on your checklist, you may still feel hesitant. If so, ask about a Trial Stay—a great way to experience a day, weekend or week at the residence(s) of your choice.
