Mindful Aging: How To Cultivate Inner Peace and Well-Being.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully engaged in the present moment. An important component of that is openness: a whole- body awareness of the thoughts, emotions and physical sensations that each moment brings, without attachment or judgement.

How exactly does living mindfully cultivate inner peace and well-being? It’s that non-attachment part—the process of accepting the inevitable changes that come with aging. When we are fully engaged in the process, it’s about finding balance rather than perfection and inner peace knowing we are doing the best we can with what we have.

5 Steps to Inner Peace

1. Let go of expectations and embrace change:

Let go of everything you expected life to be. So much easier said than done, right? Start small: forget unrealistic exercise goals, ignore what others may think and just do you. By simply going with the flow of what is happening instead of what you expected to happen, you begin to adapt and accept what
is.

2. Nurture a positive attitude through grace and gratitude

Self-compassion and self-care are paramount to a positive attitude. Granting yourself a little grace as you flow through changes helps you to accept the ups and downs for what they are. One of the biggest steps towards a positive attitude is practising daily gratitude. Cultivate a healthy mindset that allows you to find something to be grateful for in every moment, even if it’s not how you expected it to be—especially if it’s not how you expected it to be.

Remember that self-care includes giving your body the nourishing foods and restorative sleep it needs. It also helps to surround yourself with positive influences.

3. Be Active and Engaged

From stretching and yoga to hiking, swimming or daily walks around the block, infusing movement into your daily routine benefits your mind, body and spirit. Physical exercise boosts the energy you need to be active, alert and engaged in the moment.

Mental exercise is vital too. Engaging in creative pursuits and enrichment activities helps to maintain a sharp mind, a lively spirit and a sense of purpose.

4. Nurture Your Social Connections

A supportive social environment is also important for mindful aging. Maintaining strong, positive, personal connections is beneficial to your mental and emotional well-being.

Don’t be afraid to embrace technology as a valuable tool for keeping you connected to friends and family and informed about your community. But engage wisely: See helpful tips for tech safety here.

5. Practice Mindfulness and Meditation

Spend just five minutes a day practicing mindfulness directly. This can be through meditation, breathing exercises, journaling, or simply observing your surroundings for a moment through the five senses. Keeping a journal is an especially powerful way to practise awareness of your experience and emotions.

All of these tips and strategies will help you build the resilience to navigate life’s transitions, as well as combat stress, anxiety and even illness. Interested in learning more? Indigo has a wide variety of books on mindfulness and meditation to help you cultivate inner peace and well-being.
